Mr Jack Buchanan, who is 81, is on a mission for his company, SME Steel Contractors Inc Buchanan came to the Pocatello office of the Idaho Department of Labor on Friday afternoon to give the state’s human resource agency some very good news.
SME, which closed its Pocatello plant in May 2013, has hired Mr Buchanan to reopen its Pocatello plant and hire 140 workers.
According to the Idaho Department of Labor, there are an additional 60 other job openings from other employers related to advanced manufacturing listed with the agency’s Pocatello office.
Mr Dan Cravens, regional economist for the Idaho Department of Labor said that “This is good news. More manufacturing jobs will be a welcome addition to the region’s economy. This news highlights that the economy in the area is improving. I am hopeful these new jobs will help other industry sectors such as retail in our area.”
According to Idaho Department of Labor’s September unemployment figures released recently, employment in August statewide fell from 4.7% to 4.5%. The unemployment in Southeast Idaho is even lower with the rate in Bannock County at 4.1% and Bingham County at 3.6%.
Mr Buchanan said that “SME Steel is growing and needs to re-open the plant to meet new business opportunities brought on by the growing economy. The company provides structural steel products. Past projects have included the San Francisco 49ers’ new stadium, and Aladdin and Stratosphere Casino Hotels in Las Vegas.
He said that “Our Pocatello is one of the best facilities in the country for what we do. The workforce here is great. There is a wonderful work ethic here in Pocatello, especially among the older workers.”
