Medium Carbon Steel

Medium-Carbon-Steel

Medium Carbon
Steel contains between 0.25 -0.7% carbon and used for machine components
requiring high strength and good fatigue resistance. Medium steels are stronger
than low carbon steels and can be further strengthened by heat treatment. They
are used for shafts, high tensile tubes, wires, fish plates, turbo-generator,
shafts, dies, razor, die blocks, gears, railways wheel steel tires, agricultural
tools.

A210 is the Specification for Seamless Medium-Carbon Steel Boiler
and Superheater Tubes

Executive Tube Standard : ASTM A210/A210M Seamless medium-carbon steel boiler
and super heater tube. The main Steel Grade: Gr A1, Gr C.

Medium steels are classified as follows

1) Steel containing 0.35 to 0.45 % carbon. The tensile strength is about 750
N/mm2. They are used for making:

  • Connecting rods
  • Wires ands rods
  • Spring clips
  • Gear Shafts
  • Key Stock
  • Shift and brake levers
  • Axles
  • Small and medium forgings

2) Steels containing 0.45 to 0.55% carbon. The tensile strength is about 1000
N/mm2 and are used for making parts subjected to shock and stress. Such steels
are used for making:

  • Railways coach axles
  • Axles
  • Crank pins for heavy machines
  • Spine shafts

3) Steel containing 0.6 to 0.7% carbon. The tensile strength is about
1230N/mm2 and a hardness of 400-450 BHN. Such steels are used for making:

  • Drop forging dies
  • Die blocks
  • Set screws
  • Clutch discs
  • Plates punches
  • Valve Springs
  • Cushion rings
  • Thrust washers
