Indian Steel Industry performance in April – January 2018

As per the latest provisional data from JPC, Indian crude steel production during April-January 2018 was 84.4 million tonnes, a YoY growth of 4.2% YoY and production for sale of total finished steel was 88.6 million tonne, up by 5.3% YoY, while consumption of total finished steel saw a growth of 5.4% to climb to 72.5 million tonne. Import of total finished steel increased by 5.5% YoY to 6.4 million tonne while export of total finished steel was up by 40.29% to 8.2 million tonnes.

Crude Steel – During April-January 2017-18, crude steel production was 84.42 million tonnes, a growth of 4.2% over same period of last year. SAIL, RINL, Tata Steel, Essar, JSW & JSPL together produced 48.718 million tonnes this period which was a growth of 6.3% over same period of last year. The rest i.e. 35.702 million tonnes came from the Other Producers, which was a growth of 1.5% over same period of last year. Overall crude steel production in January 2018 (8.778 million tonnes) was down by 0.4% over January 2017 and was down by 0.2% over December 2017.

Hot Metal – During April-January 2017-18, hot metal production was 55.216 million tonnes, a growth of 2.1% over same period of last year. SAIL, RINL, Tata Steel, Essar, JSW & JSPL together produced 45.535 million tonnes during this period which was a growth of 3.9% over same period of last year. The rest i.e. 9.681 million tonnes came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 5.7% over same period of last year. Overall hot metal production in January 2018 (5.745 million tonnes) was up by 6.2% over January 2017 and was up by 0.6% over December 2017.

Total Finished Steel Production for sale – Production for sale of total finished steel at 88.592 million tonnes, registered a growth of 5.3% during April-January 2017-18 over same period of last year. SAIL, RINL, Tata Steel, Essar, JSW & JSPL together produced 51.717 million tonnes during this period which was a growth of 9% over same period of last year. The rest came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 6.3% over same period of last year. Overall production for sale of total finished steel in January 2018 (9.543 million tonnes) was up by 5.7% over January 2017 and was up by 6.6% over December 2017.

Exports – Export of total finished steel was up by 40.2% in April-January 2017-18 (8.222 million tonnes) over same period of last year. Overall exports in January 2018 (0.616 million tonnes) was down by 30.8% over January 2017 and was down by 36.1% over December 2017.

Imports – Import of total finished steel at 6.432 million tonnes in April-January 2017-18 was up by 5.5% over same period of last year.Overall imports in January 2018 (0.335 million tonnes) was down by 44.5% over January 2017 and was down by 40.4% over December 2017. 

Consumption – India’s consumption of total finished steel saw a growth of 5.4% in April-January 2017-18 (72.497 million tonnes) over same period of last year, under the influence of rising production for sale and imports. Overall consumption in January 2018 (7.629 million tonnes) was up by 6.8% over January 2017 and was up by 0.1% over December 2017.
